Who will be open-minded and ready to get involved in a variety of activities aiming to support children in difficult situation.

Interest in Child Care.

A commitment to learning and a willingness to encourage others to participate in activities.

Flexibility

Fluent in English or French.

Strong inter-personal skills and experience in working with a wide variety of people; cultural sensitivity, and ability to work on sensitive topics.

Ready to share the lifestyle of local people (simple accommodation, transport by bus or bicycle, local food).

High motivation and to be ready to face language and cultural differences.

The center requires volunteers with counseling and teaching skills; preferably teachers in English or French and teachers for early childhood education and nursery schooling. However, we have an open policy and applicants with other ideas to share are also welcome to apply and will be considered. Volunteers need to contribute/initiate ideas and by that would be promoting the growth of the center. This is an opportunity for the volunteers to work at a community/grassroot level in capacity building and training in self-sustainability.

Bookshare (www.bookshare.org) is a project of Benetech, a non-profit technology company that looks for ways in which technology can benefit humanity. Bookshare is one of its biggest projects — and is currently the largest digital library of accessible books for people who are blind or have other print disabilities. But the collection is far from complete. Our members have a deep passion for reading. Given that less than 5% of the world’s books are available in accessible formats, the need for Bookshare is great. Through an amazing virtual system our community of volunteers helps bridge the gap, book by book.

This exciting internship involves a combination of crucial tasks with Bookshare’s Collection Development department which is responsible for growing our online library of accessible books for people with print disabilities. Responsibilities include:

Running quality checks on books that have been scanned and submitted to the collection

Proofreading high priority scanned books for the collection

Assisting with the creation of a proofreading manual for partner organizations

Running inventory checks on books ordered for processing

We are looking for people with the following qualities:

Attention to detail

Excellent written communication skills

Ability to work independently

A passion for reading, and an interest in working with a non-profit at the intersection of books, technology and disability service

Have an interest in teaching and business?

Volunteer to teach a business and entrepreneurship program for incarcerated and court-involved youth and adults in Massachusetts.

The Entrepreneurship 101 Course, part of the Massachusetts Community Outreach Initiative, is currently recruiting volunteers to teach three fantastic programs:

(1) to adults in prison (including those in Middleton, Framingham, and Boston)
(2) to youth in juvenile detention; and
(3) to people in the community with criminal records.

This is a unique experience that allows you to share your education and experience with those that really need some guidance. Our students are engaged, enthusiastic and appreciative of the opportunity to participate in such a valuable program. Our courses have a tremendous impact on our students – and you will gain valuable life experiences and perspective.

City Year for Kids is a fun, and educational week-long vacation camp that City Year Boston runs during the winter and spring school vacations. We provide a safe, engaging place for children to go who may not otherwise have adult supervision when school is out. The camps are located at four sites throughout Boston, serving roughly 700 children. During the camps, pairs of corps members and volunteers lead teams of 10-12 elementary school children.

This year’s winter program, runs from Monday February 15th through Friday February 19th, and would be an excellent volunteer opportunity for your organization. Volunteers are welcome to volunteer for just one day or all four. Volunteers will also be required to attend one training prior to the camp.

Overview of the Spiritual Empowerment of Junior Youth Program

The Magdalene Carney Bahá\’í Institute (MCBI) is a non-profit organization providing educational and service programs to children, youth, and adults of all faiths and denominations. These programs are designed to empower individuals by developing their spiritual and intellectual capacities for the purpose of service to their community. The Institute serves communities and neighborhoods in five States: Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee.

Recognizing the inherent, growing, and untapped capacity of junior youth (11-14 years old) to contribute towards the betterment of the world, the Spiritual Empowerment of Junior Youth Program at MCBI is designed to assist them in navigating this crucial stage of their life, developing a moral structure as well as their powers of expression, all for the purpose of empowering them to direct their energies toward the advancement of civilization. In these years of transition for a historically underestimated, misunderstood, and neglected portion of our population the physical, emotional, and mental changes take on special significance in the context of emerging new powers, awareness, and consciousness. Therefore, it is in this period when the junior youth in this program embark on a life dedicated to the service of humanity.

The Institute provides training and practice for youth and young adults (usually 18-35) to form junior youth groups that meet once a week to explore concepts of justice, unity, cooperation, and equality in the context of their daily lives. Through a process of action and reflection — and most central to the purpose of these junior youth groups — they strive to apply this learning in their own neighborhoods and communities through service activities. Those who become trained are called an “animator” whose multifaceted role is one of being a true friend who helps the junior youth remain hopeful and assured that they will not only protect themselves against the negative influences of society, but will recognize their nobility as human beings and dedicate their lives to act as unifying forces and champions of justice and service. As they engage in these activities, they find themselves in the company of like-minded individuals who become their co-workers in this process of building up a new civilization.

The facilitation of these groups acknowledges the need for the junior youth to be the animating force of their endeavors and for them to express their hopes and needs – a junior youth group for junior youth by junior youth. The animator assists them in articulating and accomplishing the group’s evolving goals by creating an environment of mutual support conducive to developing the perception and patterns of thought and behavior that will characterize them as contributors to the betterment of humanity.

Training sessions are designed to reach out to interested youth and young adults in pursuing this unique volunteer opportunity. MCBI offers both weekend intensive training sessions at the institute or weekly training sessions in communities themselves. In an experiential learning method, the training emphasizes learning through practice and thus all volunteers will be accompanied by experienced animators until they feel comfortable and confident in their skills to establish and sustain a junior youth group of their own. MCBI primarily focuses on establishing junior youth groups in neighborhoods or in collaboration with after-school programs, youth organizations, and youth programs.
