Camp AmeriKids, a summer camp for children living with HIV/AIDS, is looking for caring, responsible, energetic and fun counselors for our 2012 season. A volunteer counselor team is responsible for the 24-hour supervision of a cabin and maintains a camper to counselor ratio of about 2 to1. Counselors spend each day of the one week camp session with their cabin group as they rotate through a schedule of activities and participate in new and exciting workshops provided by the program staff. The cabin counselor’s enthusiastic participation in all aspects of camp, from meals and activities to nightly special events and cabin chats, is crucial in creating a memorable camp experience for our campers. Counselors are expected to be role models, sources of energy and ideas, and are a key part of the Camp AmeriKids community. Room & board at our site in Warwick, NY provided. Volunteers can apply for one or both of the following sessions:

Life Directions staff in partnership with peer leaders provide three interconnected programs that network the social capitol of adolescents and the adults who support them.

The Peer Motivation Program operates in the high school bringing achieving students together with at-risk students. The students explore issues they confront, see ways to be responsible for their future, discuss common challenges and consider consequences to actions.

The Peer Mentor Program is an intergenerational after school program. Achieving 10th-11th graders from who completed the Peer Motivation Program are recruited and trained as Peer Mentors. After school they mentor 8th graders from a nearby grammar school to prepare them for a positive transition to High School. Peer Mentors receive support, encouragement and guidance from trained Adult Coaches from both neighborhood and business communities.

The Neighborhood Enrichment Program inspires young adults 18 to 35 years and adult volunteers over age 35, to “break the cycle of violence in the community” through peer outreach and organizing intergenerational events with youth involved in the Peer Motivation and Peer Mentor programs.

Since 1970, volunteers have answered crisis calls on the Crisis Hotline 24-hours a day, 365 days a year. Join this legacy of volunteering at one of the largest Hotlines in the country. To prepare you for this experience, your crisis intervention skills are assessed and you are provided web-based, classroom, and hands-on training. From a database of over 6,500 resources, volunteers are able to refer callers to agencies and services that meet their needs. Volunteers schedule to work four-hours shifts for one year following their training. As Riley, a three-year telephone volunteer says, “Being a Crisis Hotline volunteer means being in a win/win situation. I help others and I feel good about myself for being available.”

Teen line volunteers, between the ages of 15-19, are offered the same intensive training and includes a focus on youth related issues. Operating after-school and on the weekends, these volunteers are afforded a unique opportunity to assist their peers in crisis.

Spanish Hotline volunteers assist callers who are most comfortable expressing themselves in Spanish. Bi-lingual volunteers can answer both Crisis Hotline and Spanish Hotline.
Students over the age of 15 are welcome to volunteer with us. Training takes place in three parts: 20 hours of classroom training, 12 hours of observation on the Hotline and a set of online study guides.

Each year the administrators and staff of Vita-Living, Inc. work hard to provide a special holiday for our clients that live in the group home and for the clients whose families lack the resources to purchase gifts during the holidays. Although many of our clients have very loving families, there are those whose “family” consists of only the Vita-Living staff. For them, they will not receive gifts for the holidays unless they are donated.

Help Santa this year by adopting a client and making their holiday special. If you choose to participate, you will be given a bio and wishlist for each client you adopt. We are asking that you purchase, wrap, and label the items with the client’s name and deliver them to our Holiday Kickoff event on December 16th.

Be immersed in Chinese culture: Teach, learn, forge friendships, live in schoolhouse.

Overview of the Itinerary:

Land in Beijing and spend a few days sightseeing (Forbidden City, Great Wall).
Travel to Haojiping, in a beautiful and remote area of the Hunan province.
While staying in a pressed-earth schoolhouse, teach English and environmental studies to local Chinese students (particularly girls).
On regular days of rest, visit the students’ families, explore nearby towns, go hiking, shop at local markets.
End with a graduation ceremony and trip back to Huaihua, Beijing and home.

Volunteers: The minimum age is 16, and all ages are welcome. Some knowledge of Chinese is helpful, but not necessary. Volunteers come from the U.S. and Canada, China, and a few other countries. The volunteers will live together (in same-sex rooms) for the duration of the program.

Students: The children are from the local area, and range in age from about 8 to 16; they are grouped by age into classes of 20-30 students.

Every summer since 2001, approximately 35 volunteers have participated in China Summer, working together to teach roughly 150 rural Chinese students. The goals are to:

Provide educational opportunities to rural students (especially girls), and strengthen environmental awareness.
Build friendships and understanding among people from around the world.
Foster youth leadership through practical experience in a challenging environment.
Experience life in rural China first-hand; learn about current social, political, environmental, and economic issues.

While in Beijing and Huaihua, volunteers stay at a hostel or hotel. In Haojiping, the program is hosted by the local school, the Haojiping Ethnic School. This will be the school’s third year providing the site for the program; the school is perched on a mountainside about a ten minute walk from the main street of Haojiping.

The school is made up of a complex of buildings, including classroom buildings, teacher housing, and student dormitories. Volunteers share a dormitory room with 7-10 of the same gender.

China Summer Teaching 2011 is $2495. The fee includes:

Extensive pre-departure training from the United Planet head office
Chinese food (3 meals a day)
All accommodations (hostel or hotel in Beijing, Huaihua; dormitory in Haojiping)
Airport and train station welcomes
All transportation within China (between Beijing, Huaihua, and Haojiping)
Beijing sightseeing; or university and college visit in Beijing
Huaihua sightseeing
Haojiping excursions
Emergency medical insurance
Country coordinator support
Thoroughly researched volunteer project
Volunteer care and other services

Camp AmeriKids, a summer camp for children living with HIV/AIDS, is looking for caring, responsible, energetic and fun counselors for our 2011 season.

Session One: July 23rd – July 30th
Session Two: August 3rd – August 10th

Applications are available on our website www.campamerikids.org. Please contact us if you are interested in more information. Thank you! Hope to see you this summer…

Do you have a great admiration for those donate their time for others? Do you enjoy working with other volunteers helping to create a better organization? Join the 1.3 million other Red Cross volunteers and help us be a true volunteer lead organization. Your involvement empowering other volunteers will help us bridge the gap between our volunteers and our duty to the American people. Being a part of our Volunteer Management team will allow you to:

-Manage other volunteers and help us support our day-to-day operations
-Get to know current volunteers and share with them ways to get involved in the community
-Recruit and orient new volunteers to our organization in the field and in cyberspace
-Ensure a quality experience for both the volunteer and the organization
-Recognize volunteers for their contributions
-Maintain accurate records tracking the history and progress of our volunteers

Volunteering in volunteer services helps create a special relationship between you and the other volunteers. As an integral part of any volunteer program, volunteer management is an opportunity to gain leadership skills and allow others to successfully volunteer, and become true stewards in their communities. Your Service however indirect, would make all the difference in helping the Red Cross help others. As a 96% volunteer led organization, we need you most of all.

The Carolinas Challenge Walk is a three-day 50 mile walk that begins in historic Charleston, SC. Participants in the walk raise a minimum of $1,500 and accept the challenge on a journey toward a world free of MS!

Many volunteers are needed to support this walk. Rest stops are set up every three miles and water stops every mile and a half. Hosting a rest stop is fun! Let your creativity run wild and create an atmosphere that rejuvenates the walkers and sends them on their way, refreshed and energized.

We need Rest Stop Captains, Medical Volunteers, Athletic Trainers, Physical Therapists, HAM Radio Operators, Supply Truck Drivers, and more to serve as “Crew” for the weekend. As crew, you would commit to the three days of the Challenge Walk to support the walkers each step of the way!

If you are only able to commit for a few hours or for one day of the event, that’s okay! We need volunteers to help with registration, serve as lunch runners, help with set-up and break-down, and so much more!

The Carolinas Challenge Walk will be held March 4th-6th in Charleston, SC. To learn more about the Carolinas Challenge Walk MS and to register, go to: wwwchallengeMS.org.
