White House Launches 2011 Campus “Champions of Change” Challenge

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the White House announced the launch of the 2011 Campus “Champions of Change” Challenge. The Challenge invites college and university students from across the country to demonstrate how their student-led project is improving their campus community and helping America win the future. In the spring of 2012, the challenge will announce the five Campus “Champions of Change” and host a culminating event at the White House. The Challenge finalists, in addition to the concluding event, will be highlighted by mtvU and MTV Act.

“All Across America, college and university students are helping our country out-innovate, out-educate, and out-build the rest of the world,” said President Obama. “I hope this challenge shines a light on their efforts, and inspires Americans of all ages to get involved in their communities.”

“We know that students are a powerful engine for social change,” said Stephen Friedman, President of MTV. “We’re proud to partner with the White House to give students a national platform to spotlight the incredible work they’re doing to inspire change in communities, and in our country.”

In order to participate in the competition, students are asked to submit an online application atwww.WhiteHouse.gov/CampusChallenge. The application consists of three essay questions, and optional video/photos that demonstrate how their project created a solution that improved their campus or local community. The deadline to submit applications is Friday, December 9, 2011 at 11:59 pm EST. Following the application deadline, the White House will select 15 finalists based on input from a panel of judges. The public will then have an opportunity to weigh in on the projects they think best embody the President’s goal to win the future. The top five finalists will be named Campus Champions of Change.

In addition to being invited to the White House for a culminating event, these five Campus Champions of Change will have the opportunity to work with mtvU, and MTV Act to create short features about their projects that will air on mtvU and be featured on MTV.com. The winning team will also host an episode of mtvU’s signature program, “The Dean’s List”. mtvU is MTV’s 24-hour college network, reaching upwards of 9 million U.S. college students on 750 college campuses, and MTV Act celebrates young people making an impact on the big issues facing their generation.

The Champions of Change program was created as a part of President Obama’s Winning the Future initiative. Each week, a different issue is highlighted and groups of Champions, ranging from educators to entrepreneurs to community activists, are recognized for the work they are doing to better their communities.

Through a grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service and the New York State Commission on National and Community Service, NYCC has received additional AmeriCorps Education Award Program (EAP) funding for the 2011-2012 program year. EAP fosters civic engagement among higher education students, promotes the National Service movement, and encourages positive relationships between campuses and communities. The program meets critical community needs by engaging college students in service as part-time AmeriCorps members, and fostering within them an ethic of civic responsibility.

Upon successful completion of 300 hours of service in a calendar year, students are eligible to receive a $1,175 Education Award to be applied toward outstanding federal student loans or the cost of attendance at a college or university. With rising tuition costs the education award earned upon successful completion of the program helps make service a viable opportunity for students with financial need.

Please review the Request for Proposals and NYCC’s website for more information on this program opportunity.

** All proposals are to be submitted electronically (with original signatures) by 5pm on Friday, November 18th, 2011.**

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, through its scholarship and grantmaking programs, helps exceptionally promising, low-income students, from middle school to graduate school, reach their full potential through education. Our work allows us to see first-hand how high-achieving, low-income students overcome obstacles and excel academically. Our research, however, has shown that many high-potential, low-income students are unable to successfully navigate these obstacles. In The Achievement Trap (2007), we found that there is a significant drop off in the number of low-income students who are identified as high-achieving throughout the primary and secondary education system. These student experiences raise important questions about the factors and contexts that help some low-income students overcome personal adversity, limited educational opportunities, and challenging socioeconomic circumstances to excel academically, and how a deeper understanding of such matters can be used to design programs and interventions that will help more low-income students identified as high achieving early in their primary and secondary school years to sustain their academic achievement levels through college and beyond.

In response to this gap in knowledge, the Foundation has created the Cooke Dissertation Fellowship for advanced doctoral students who are completing dissertations that further the understanding of the educational pathways and experiences of high-achieving, low-income students. The fellowship is intended to focus more scholarly attention on the population of students the Foundation serves in order to enable parents, policymakers, and practitioners to better support such students in achieving their full potential.

Dissertation fellowships are intended to support the doctoral student for work done after the student’s dissertation has been successfully defended. Applications are encouraged from a variety of disciplines such as, but not limited to, education, sociology, economics, psychology, statistics, and psychometrics.

The fellowship is a one-time award of up to $25,000, which may be used for a period of not less than nine months and up to 18 months.

MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY
Applicants for Jack Kent Cooke Dissertation Fellowships:
•	may be US citizens, US permanent residents, or non-US citizens;
•	must currently be studying at a US accredited institution;
•	must be advanced doctoral students, who have completed all pre-dissertation requirements (including the proposal);
•	must not have previously received a Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship.

In 1994, Congress designated the King Holiday as a national day of service and charged CNCS with leading this effort. The MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – a “day on, not a day off.” CNCS works with the King Center and thousands of nonprofit, education, business, and other organizations around the country to carry out the MLK Day of Service, which will take place on Monday, January 16, 2012.

As one component of the MLK Day of Service, CNCS awards grants to organizations to engage volunteers in service projects to meet local community needs. Eligible applicants include, but are not limited to nonprofit organizations, state service commissions, volunteer centers, institutions of higher education, national or regional education agencies, educational institutions, and faith-based institutions.

CNCS anticipates making an estimated seven awards to intermediary organizations to support 2012 King Day activities, with awards ranging from approximately $50,000 to $300,000, to support the first year of these grants. Grantees must competitively subgrant a portion of the federal funds to eligible organizations to plan and carry out direct service activities.

In alignment with the CNCS Strategic Plan, applicants are encouraged to identify potential subgrantees that focus on the agency’s six focus areas: disaster services, economic opportunity, education, environmental stewardship, healthy futures, and veterans and military families.

Applications are due no later than 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time on July 21, 2011. Successful applicants will be notified by mid-September.

For more information and to read the Notice of Funding Availability on the CNCS website, to go http://www.nationalservice.gov/for_organizations/funding/nofa.asp.
A technical assistance call for individuals wishing to learn more about the 2012 MLK Day of Service grant competition will take place on Thursday, June 30, 2011, at 1:30pm EDT. Interested individuals should call 1-866-705-1874 and use passcode 7103609.

The U.S. Department of Labor Monday invited grant applications for the $122-million Career Pathways Innovation Fund. The announcement coincided with the first of four regional community college summits being hosted by the U.S. Department of Education. Introduced last year by the Labor Department, the Career Pathways Innovation Fund replaced the existing Community-Based Job Training Program. Labor Department officials hope this new grant will bolster some of the career pathways models already in place in several states. Financial awards will be given to “community colleges and consortia of community colleges that are developing or expanding career pathway programs in partnership with education and training providers, employers, and the workforce investment system.” At least $65 million of the total funds will be reserved “for projects that focus on the health care sector.” The Labor Department will fund “approximately 40 to 50 grants ranging from $1 million to $5 million.”

All Campus Compact administrators and advisors have the opportunity to win grant money for student service projects. True Hero, Inc. awards grant money to schools and organizations in an effort to support students doing good work in their communities and around the world. The awards are granted to those student community service projects receiving the most eligible votes from the general public during the current school year at www.truehero.org.

In last year’s competition, Campus Compact schools combined to win $8,000 in True Hero grants. Campus Compact winning schools for the 2009-2010 competition include: Saint Anselm College, Villanova University, Marquette University, Indiana University, and University of Cincinnati. This year, a total of $20,000 in grants will be given away June 30, 2011.

To POST a service project, follow these easy steps:
1) Visit www.truehero.org and get a project posted…all you need is a short paragraph/description about a service project.
2) Get votes for your service project…send out an email blast to all your friends, family, faculty and fellow students with a link to the site and encourage them to vote for your project.
3) Come June 30th, seven grants will be given at the university/college level to the top seven vote getters.

*Other grants will be awarded to high school and community sponsored projects.

Winning is easy, you just have to get people to go online and vote! Check out www.truehero.org and see how easy it is to participate. We know it would be an amazing opportunity for all Campus Compact schools to participate; not only to win grant money, but to gain awareness for their service projects. If you have any questions, or if I can be of any assistance in getting a project posted, please let me know! Also, check out the newsletter below and learn more about the Campus Compact schools’ winning projects. We hope you will pass this along to your network and encourage school involvement.
