2012 Ernest A. Lynton Award for the Scholarship of Engagement for Early Career Faculty

Sponsored by the New England Resource Center for Higher Education (NERCHE), The annual Ernest A. Lynton Award for the Scholarship of Engagement for Early Career Faculty recognizes a faculty member who is pre-tenure at tenure-granting campuses or early career (i.e., within the first six years) at campuses with long-term contracts and who connects his or her teaching, research, and service to community engagement.

The Lynton Award emphasizes community-based scholarly work across faculty roles. The scholarship of engagement (also known as outreach scholarship, public scholarship, scholarship for the common good, community-based scholarship, and community-engaged scholarship) represents an integrated view of faculty roles in which teaching, research/creative activity, and service overlap and are mutually reinforcing, is characterized by scholarly work tied to a faculty member’s expertise, is of benefit to the external community, is visible and shared with community stakeholders, and reflects the mission of the institution. In addition, NERCHE conceptualizes scholarly engagement in terms of social justice in a diverse democracy.

The award will be presented at the 18th Annual Conference of the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU) which will be held from October 13-16, 2012, at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. CUMU is a co-sponsor of the Award.

Nominators will submit nominations via an online application. To submit an application, please see the Application Instructions: Here.

Application Deadline: Friday, April 27, 2012.

THE NEWMAN CIVIC FELLOWS

The Newman Civic Fellows Award honors inspiring college student leaders who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country. Through service, research, and advocacy, Newman Civic Fellows are making the most of their college experiences to better understand themselves, the root causes of social issues, and effective mechanisms for creating lasting change. These students represent the next generation of public problem solvers and civic leaders. They serve as national examples of the role that higher education can—and does—play in building a better world.

Recommendations for the 2012 Newman Civic Fellows Awards opens on Monday, January 9, 2012.

All recommendations must be submitted electronically and are due no later than Tuesday, February 21, 2012.

Honorees (who must be affiliated with a Campus Compact member institution) are recognized for exemplary engaged scholarship, including leadership in advancing students’ civic learning, conducting community-based research, fostering reciprocal community partnerships, building institutional commitments to service-learning and civic engagement, and other means of enhancing higher education’s contributions to the public good. The award — previously known as the Thomas Ehrlich Faculty Award for Service-Learning — is named in honor of Thomas Ehrlich, former chair of the Campus Compact board of directors and president emeritus of Indiana University.

The award winner will be granted $2,000 and the opportunity to conduct a session at the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) Annual Conference 2013. Four finalists will also be featured in a panel presentation at the conference.

completed at least one year of college;

demonstrated leadership in community service;

been attending a two- or four- year school.

Helping Students Finish School

Again in 2011, the Pearson Foundation is identifying 70 students to receive the Pearson Prize in support of their school works and their commitment to the local community. The Pearson Prize offers two fellowships:

Pearson Prize National Fellows (20) receive $10,000, paid over two years.

Pearson Prize Community Fellows(50) receive $500, awarded in a single year.

The Pearson Prize Higher Education offers more than a financial reward. After a student receives the Pearson Prize, he or she enters into an ongoing support network of current and past Pearson Prize Fellows. All Pearson Prize Fellows gain access to unique student resources and opportunities from Pearson, a leader in education.

Supporting Communities by Investing in Students

Most college award programs and scholarships focus on graduating high school students and award their academic merits. However, often the most dynamic students don’t discover their direction until after their freshman year in college. So, it is often the case that a complete student – one dedicated to service and to the college community – may be least likely to get additional support.

By addressing the needs of these emerging leaders at this point in a college career, the Pearson Prize for Higher Education fills a gap in the student investment scheme of other non-profits, state organization, and philanthropic organizations.

The Do Something Awards (formerly the BR!CK Awards) identifies exceptional young social entrepreneurs, activists, and community leaders who have a significant social impact. The Do Something Award nominees and winners are the pivotal “do-ers” in their fields and causes. For this year’s awards five nominees will be selected and rewarded with a $10,000 community grant, participation in the second Do Something Awards TV show on VH1, media coverage, and continued support from DoSomething.org. Of those five nominees, one will be selected to win the Grand Prize, a $100,000 grant, which will be announced during the live broadcast.

Additionally, you can recommend people for the award by filling out a simple nomination form at www.dosomething.org/awards. Quantity of applications is not a concern. Rather, we want to identify the “best-in-class” activists, leaders, and social entrepreneurs age 25 and under. Applicants must be citizens or residents of the U.S. or Canada and must apply by March 1st, 2011, although applying earlier is strongly encouraged.

Introducing the Students in Service Awards™!

This is an exciting new college student scholarship opportunity! It’s called the Students in Service Awards™, and is a national search for inspirational college students who are positively impacting social and environmental challenges facing our communities. This is open to ALL college students. See specific eligibility requirements on our website.

Washington Campus Compact has partnered with Inspireum, a technology company that runs national inspirational awards programs, to celebrate the service work of these outstanding college students. Together, we seek to engage the broader community in supporting students, colleges and universities, and community organizations that cultivate student civic leadership through service.

The Students in Service Awards™ include scholarships and grants to three benefactors:

• College/University Students: One winner will receive a $5,000 academic service scholarship. Two runners-up will each receive $2,500 scholarships.

• College/University Service-Learning Centers: $2,500 grants will go to the college or university service-learning center of each of the three finalists for the purpose of supporting their civic engagement programs for students.

• Nonprofit Partners: $2,500 grants will go to each of the three nonprofit partners sponsoring the winning service projects to support their vital community work.

Students who apply for this award will have their projects posted on the Students in Service Awards website. Students, educators, family members, and other community members will be invited to vote for their favorite student/service project. Fan votes and the Washington Campus Compact staff will select the top 50 inspirational Semifinalists. A national Selection Committee of civic leaders, along with a fan vote, chooses the final Students In Service AwardTM winner and scholarship recipients.

You may download the program overview. Also, we have developed an interim website, www.serviceawards.org, to provide you with additional details on eligibility and the nomination process. The comprehensive website will be open for nominations December 15, 2010 through January 28, 2011.

Please share this opportunity throughout your networks and with college students you know who are making a difference. This is our pilot year and we hope that through this scholarship program, we can collectively bring greater visibility to the valuable service college students are doing to strengthen our communities. Finalists will be announced at the Continuums of Service conference in San Diego on April 28th, 2011.

The Corporation for National and Community Service is pleased to announce that we will accept applications for the 2010 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll starting on September 27, 2010. Please note that there are significant changes to this year’s competition. The Honor Roll is shifting the emphasis from outputs, such as numbers of service participants, to community outcomes, such as the changes that result from the service activities. The 2010 competition seeks to celebrate institutions with best-practice service programs. Characteristics of such programs include using evaluation and assessment, developing collaborative community partnerships, and addressing significant community needs. Applicants should demonstrate results that are measurable and supported by credible evidence.

The President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll was created in 2006 to annually recognize the combined exemplary community service efforts of higher education institutions’ students, faculties, and staffs. Institutions that make the Honor Roll are rewarded with enriched learning, stronger alumni and community ties, public awareness of community contributions, and the ability to attract first-rate faculty and students.

For more detailed information about the 2010 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, to register, and to apply, please visit www.NationalService.gov/HonorRoll
