Green Mountain Coffee and Ashoka’s Changemakers have launched “Revelation to Action: Your Place. Your Idea. Your Change,” a new competition designed to identify and help fund innovative ideas that strengthen and improve communities in Maine, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.

Innovative solutions for motivating local citizens to build a better community may be submitted or nominated until April 21, 2010. The competition will consider all entries that reflect the theme of the competition, that demonstrate groundbreaking solutions that inspire others to help make their community a better place to live, and that indicate growth beyond the stage of idea, concept, or research. At a minimum, entries should be at the demonstration stage and indicate success. Entries must be submitted in English.

The competition is open to all types of individuals and organizations operating in the eligible states. Individuals or organizations not from the region must have local operations or partners on the ground in these states.

The three Changemakers competition winners — the finalist individuals or organizations that receive the most votes during the public voting phase — will each receive a cash prize of $5,000. The seven state winners — the best entry from each of the eligible states — will also receive cash prizes of $5,000. Nominators are also eligible for prizes. The University of Pittsburgh has launched an initiative called the Hesselbein Global Academy for Student Leadership and Civic Engagement http://www.hesselbein.pitt.edu. It aims to inspire, develop, and reward accomplished student leaders to meet the challenges of tomorrow.

A core program of the academy is the Hesselbein Student Leadership Summit to be held July 10-13, 2010 in Pittsburgh, PA. Fifty students are selected to receive advanced leadership training from mentors who are distinguished professionals in the corporate, nonprofit, military, and social sectors.

If selected, the academy covers the cost of room, board, registration, and provides $200 in travel assistance. International Perspectives: Crossing Boundaries through Research

The International Association for Research on Service Learning and Community Engagement would like to announce a Call for Nominations for three awards, to be presented at the 2010 IARSLCE Conference in Indianapolis, IN. • The Research Award recognizes any researcher who has a distinguished record of research and scholarly contributions on service-learning and community engagement.
• The Early Career Research Award recognizes outstanding early career contributions to scholarship on service-learning and community engagement.
• The Dissertation Award recognizes a dissertation that advances research on service-learning and/or community engagement through rigorous and innovative inquiry. .

Complete applications for the Research and Early Career Research Awards must be received by April 30th, 2010. Complete applications for the Dissertation Award are due by June 30, 2010. The award recipient will be notified in early June. The award recipient receives an invitation to make a presentation at the annual IARSLCE conference, a plaque (to be presented at the conference), and a monetary award in the form of complimentary IARSLCE conference registration and accommodation.

The NC State University Center for Student Leadership, Ethics & Public Service (CSLEPS) and Stop Hunger Now, a non-profit hunger relief organization, will present the award annually to a student from a U.S. based college or university. .

Award Criteria:

• Must be an enrolled student at an accredited U.S. post-secondary institution
• Demonstrated leadership in the fight against hunger
• Commitment to a life of service in the area of hunger, poverty reduction or related area

Stop Hunger Now will provide a cash award for the recipient to use towards an educational experience that will advance their knowledge and understanding of hunger and related issues.

The annual Student Leadership Awards recognize student groups who have made a difference in the world through service and philanthropic activities, both domestic and international activities will be recognized. The Jenzabar Foundation is accepting submissions from institutions of higher education, nonprofit organizations, religious organizations and self-nominations from students for their community service or humanitarian efforts during the current, 2009/2010, or previous, 2008/2009, academic year. A $5,000 grant is included with the recognition to support the student or group’s future humanitarian endeavors.

Past award honorees included a wide range of impressive achievements. Some previous recipients include The Wartburg College Feed My Starving Children Project, Engineers for a Sustainable World at Harvey Mudd College, Flagler College Students in Free Enterprise, The Student Philanthropy Project at Grove City College, and many more (see information on past winners at www.thejenzabarfoundation.org).

Nominations are open for students enrolled in any accredited institution of higher education and can be submitted by individuals, educational institutions, or nonprofit organizations that have produced work consistent with the mission of The Jenzabar Foundation: to recognize and support the good works and humanitarian efforts of student leaders serving others across the global community.

Anyone may nominate a candidate. Finalists will be asked to submit further supporting documents (letters of recommendation, articles by or about the candidate, etc.)

Preference will be given to candidates who have not been widely recognized and do not have personal privilege or a strong institutional base of support. Nominees should be:

• Under age 26 by 9/1/2009;
• Engaged in activism for social change, promoting the values of peace, human rights, economic or social justice, or freedom of expression;
• Acting not alone but within the context of an organization, social movement, or larger community effort;
• Considered by others within that context as an inspirational leader or motivating force;
• Doing work centered in the United States;
• Willing to attend award ceremony in Berkeley, California (expenses paid).

The Student Sustainability Leadership Award includes a $750 prize. In addition, the winner of this year’s award will be featured in Sustainability: The Journal of Record. The award will be presented at the Greening of the Campus VIII Conference (Sept. 20-23 in Indianapolis, IN).

Any undergraduate student enrolled at an AASHE member institution who has played a leadership role in implementing campus sustainability is eligible for this award. Students graduating in Spring 2009 are eligible.

* Community colleges and other two-year institutions
* Four-year and graduate institutions under 5,000 student FTE
* Four-year and graduate institutions 5,000 – 15,000 student FTE
* Four-year and graduate institutions over 15,000 student FTE

Submissions are judged on the following criteria:

* Overall impact of an institution’s efforts, relative to the institution’s size and wealth
* Breadth of sustainability initiatives, especially the integration of social aspects of sustainability
* Extent of student involvement in sustainability activities
* Level of support from campus administration
* Extent to which institution serves as a model for others

The winners of this year’s Campus Sustainability Leadership Awards will be featured in Sustainability: The Journal of Record. As in previous years, the winners are also likely to receive additional coverage in other media. The awards will be presented at the Greening of the Campus VIII Conference (Sept. 20-23 in Indianapolis, IN).

After the winners are announced, all Campus Sustainability Leadership Award applications are added to AASHE’s online library of campus sustainability profiles.

• Administration Commendation in Service-Learning
• This award honors an exceptional service-learning program administrator (faculty/staff member or VISTA with responsibility for coordination of service-learning activities) who has demonstrated excellence in creating, providing, and sustaining opportunities for engaging college students in service-learning.
• Service-Learning Teaching
• This award honors a faculty/staff member, or graduate assistant, who has demonstrated a sustained commitment to incorporating service-learning pedagogy in the college classroom and collaborating with community partners and/or students in course design.
• Service-Learning Research
• This award honors a faculty/staff member or graduate/undergraduate student who has shown outstanding commitment to the exploration of service-learning through research and the promotion of the scholarship of engagement among his/her colleagues.
• Student Commendation in Service-Learning
• This award honors an undergraduate or group of undergraduates who showed exceptional leadership, citizenship, and commitment through service-learning; demonstrated innovative and sustained approaches to address an issue in the community; and/or advanced the service-learning infrastructure of their institution.
• Community Partner Commendation in Service-Learning
• This award honors a community organization whose members have maintained an active voice in creating and sustaining opportunities for engaging college students in service-learning. Community partners should have collaborated with a service-learning program for more than one year in order to be nominated.
• Voyager Award
• This award honors a MCSLHE member who has demonstrated outstanding commitment and leadership in the field of service-learning throughout their professional career. This individual will be selected based on their advancement of the principles of effective practice, development of a culture of engagement within their institution, innovation in program growth and sustainability, and dedication to advancing the mission and goals of the Consortium.

To nominate an individual or group:

• Complete a nomination letter which outlines why this individual or group should be recognized, and how they have met the award requirements. (Please specify which award the nomination is for and include your name and contact information.)
• Collect 1 further letter of support for each nomination.

The Distinguished Research Award recognizes outstanding career contributions to scholarly endeavors addressing service-learning and community engagement. It is designed to recognize research that systematically addresses the exploration and understanding of the field.

The Early Career Research Award recognizes outstanding early career contributions to scholarly endeavors addressing service-learning and community engagement. It is designed to encourage research that systematically addresses the exploration and understanding of the field.

The Dissertation Award recognizes a dissertation that advances research on service-learning and/or community engagement through rigorous and innovative inquiry.

The Lynton Award emphasizes engaged scholarly work across the faculty roles. The scholarship of engagement (also known as outreach scholarship, public scholarship, scholarship for the common good, community-based scholarship, and community engaged scholarship) represents an integrated view of the faculty role in which teaching, research, and service overlap and are mutually reinforcing, is characterized by scholarly work tied to a faculty member’s expertise, is of benefit to the external community, is visible and shared with community stakeholders, and reflects the mission of the institution. In addition, NERCHE conceptualizes scholarly engagement in terms of social justice embedded in democratic ideals.

The TIAA-CREF Hesburgh Award and $20,000 is presented to the college or university judged to have, among those submitted, the most effective program that enhances undergraduate teaching and student learning.
