Campus Compact Annual Service Statistics 2000

Introduction

Campus Compact is a national coalition of college and university presidents committed to the civic purposes of higher education. To support this civic mission, Campus Compact promotes community service that develops students’ citizenship skills and values, encourages collaborative partnerships between campuses and communities, and assists faculty who seek to integrate public and community engagement into their teaching and research.

In 1985 the presidents of Brown, Georgetown, and Stanford universities and the president of the Education Commission of the States founded Campus Compact to support the growing number of college students involved in community service and to issue a call for more students to serve.

Fifteen years later, Campus Compact has a rapidly growing membership of 703 public and private, two- and four-year colleges and universities, located in 41 states and the District of Columbia. The national office is headquartered at Brown University (RI), and network offices are located in 23 states: CA, CO, CT, FL, HI, IL, IN, MA, ME, MI, MN, MO, MT, NH, OH, OK, OR, PA, RI, UT, VT, WA, and WV. The Campus Compact National Center for Community Colleges, serving community colleges across the country, is based in AZ.

Since 1987, Campus Compact has conducted an annual survey of its membership, measuring growth in community service and service-learning, and identifying issue areas and trends.

Methodology

The following figures represent the results of a mail survey of Campus Compact members conducted in summer 2000. Opinion Dynamics Corporation distributed surveys and collected responses from members of Campus Compact regarding their involvement and the involvement of their students in service activities. After the initial mailings, several follow-up calls were placed to ensure that respondents received the survey materials, and to remind them of the submission deadline. Of the 650 members surveyed, 349 responded, yielding a return of approximately 54% with a margin of error of 3% at a 95% confidence interval.

Being a part of Campus Compact has let us touch the heart and soul of building better communities while improving teaching and learning for faculty and students. James A. Drake, President, Brevard Community College
